THREE POINTER:
- Sydney Kings Part Ways with Makoi: The guard’s journey with the team ends after two seasons.
- Injury Hindrance: A serious knee injury limited Makoi’s court time.
- Future Moves: The stage is set for NBL free agency opening on April 15.
The Sydney Kings are shaking things up, and Jackson Makoi is the latest to exit stage left. The South Sudanese guard, after a stint that included championship glory and injury woes, is cutting ties with the Kings as both parties look to the future.
Injury Sidelines Potential
Makoi’s tenure with the Kings was a mixed bag. His rookie season saw him hit the hardwood 15 times, but then the injury bug bit hard, sidelining him with a knee injury that derailed his momentum. A comeback was on the cards, and he managed a solitary appearance in NBL24, but it was clear change was in the air.
A Mutual Decision
Kings CEO Chris Pongrass tipped his hat to Makoi, acknowledging the guard’s potential and contributions.
“Jackson has a bright future ahead of him,” Pongrass said. “While a talented young player, both of us saw a better opportunity for him to play meaningful minutes with another club, and so this was the best move for everyone.”
It’s a nod to the future for both the player and the team, with Pongrass adding, “He played a crucial role as part of our championship team in NBL23 and we will forever be thankful for his time here in Sydney.”
Roster Revamp Continues
Makoi’s departure isn’t the only headline in Kings’ camp. The team has been busy locking down talent, with Kouat Noi and Shaun Bruce re-signing, while waving goodbye to Angus Glover. It’s all about the right fit as the Kings sculpt their squad for NBL25.
Eyes on the Free Agency Prize
With the NBL free agency period looming on April 15, the Kings and Makoi are poised for their next plays. It’s a chessboard of strategy, potential, and new beginnings.
